Terminal 2: A Smoker’s Garden

There’s a lot to like about Singapore’s Changi Airport, the 7th busiest international airport in the world and one of Business Traveller‘s Best Airport awardee. For me, it’s that feeling that you’re just in one big mall while inside the terminal because of its 70,000 square meters of shopping and dining areas. But even malls can be just a maze of metal and concrete so it’s probably Changi’s gardens (among the most prominent are the indoor fern garden and an orchid garden and koi pond in the midst of hugely tempting duty-free shops) that makes the difference. Even smokers, who often look tortured in glass-enclosed, gas-chamber-like smoking rooms in other terminals, have this glorious ambiance of a sunflower garden in an open-air smoking area on the upper deck of Terminal 2.

The drag of endless mental work in a strange land takes its toll. Fatigue can kill so petty escapades provide hopeful deviations from the brewing madness. An aging DSLR keeps good company to a walk around the neighbourhood, a short drive to a scenic place, or a silent recollection in a quiet nook granting that the host community and the elements of nature would allow one a safe passage to solitude and contemplation. Loneliness quickly turns to joy when something exciting gets captured by the cam’s shutter then set free into the laptop’s screen followed by electric words that rush from the fingers to the keyboard in an effort to describe the moment. Alas, the brain is alive once again!

I guess so. Although it’s not so accessible so they will have to exert extra effort to get to this part — a sort of disincentive.

Well the duty-free shops are full of tobacco products so they might as well be consistent 🙂

Have heard to much about this airport … never been in Singapore – all airport should have gardens for stressed passangers. Beautiful photo. Love sun roses.

I agree! Stressed passengers should be offered something free and relaxing in the airports – such as flower gardens – not just the expensive, often unnecessary duty-free items. Thanks, viveka.
