Mary Kate

Papuan child

“Mary Kate” / Buka, Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea / 19 Nov 2014: After visiting villages where women and children are exposed to serious risks on a daily basis because of very limited access to potable water and sanitary toilets, I found Mary Kate helping her mother sell young coconuts along the road for a living. She is just one of the many children in this region exposed to such difficulties and risks.

“Nearly 25 years ago, the world made a promise to children: that we would do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights to survive and thrive, to learn and grow, to make their voices heard and to reach their full potential. In spite of the overall gains, there are many children who have fallen even further behind. Old challenges have combined with new problems to deprive many children of their rights and the benefits of development.” (UN)

I join the  community of nations in helping fulfill this promise and in observing the UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY today, 20 November 2014.
