The Header Photo
I am using my own original photos for the header image in my blog and, in choosing the photo to be used in the header, I only had one criteria in mind: it should be one of the best photos I have ever taken. The very first header photo I decided to use in this blog is this one:
“Equestrian Moon” / Mongolia 2009 (Central Aimag): It was late autumn when I last visited Mongolia in 2009. Though the weather was getting really cold, the snow has not fallen yet and travel to the countryside was still favorable. I and a good friend decided to drive to the Central Aimag (the province closest to the capital city of Ulaanbaatar) one weekend to visit another old friend who was a doctor but chose to live among the nomadic herders. It was another great photo opportunity for me when we reached our friend’s herder camp and I had a busy time taking photos of the people and surroundings in this exotic place. We were about to get back to our car and head home when I noticed the full moon rising in the horizon while a group of horses still grazed on the steppes. One of the resulting photos was this fantastic silhouette of grazing horses.
Awesome! (a professional photographer friend of mine told me that the moon is one of the hardest objects to photograph) Mongolia sounds exotic, although when I think of winter my Southeast Asian blood automatically curdles. Love this photo! Thanks for sharing it.

Many thanks Hazel. As in many great photos, the opportunity to take this one came unexpectedly yet I really like the outcome. I’m an Asian myself but I survived minus 40 degrees Celsius in Bayan Olgii, one of the coldest provinces of Mongolia, for 3 days. Of course, the loving care of my local hosts – and probably horse meat which was the staple food of Mongolian Kazakhs — helped a lot! Thanks for dropping by.

I usually like either the photographs or presentation/narration of blogs I visit. In this case, both are done to a very high standard.
As someone who avoids photographing people, I found it educational to see it done right. In reviewing your older posts I forgot to “like” many of the ones that struck me as especially good (got lost in the exploring). I’ll not forget in the future, but meanwhile, please assume I “like” a crapload of your posts.

Wow this is an amazing photo. I am always trying to get photos of the moon because I love the feeling of those moments. But – I am too much of an amateur. My husband bought me a new camera to take HDR photos. As much as I want to learn how to use it. I resist because once again it is for my brain.
Mongolia must be the place to go now. I know a couple of different people who gave there recently. Have fun and enjoy.

Brilliant photo! Most silhouette shots are masked in the warm glow of orange dusk. This is like the moon rising instead of the sun setting. Nope – not bad moon rising. There is a stark simplicity in this that is so serene. It’s breathtaking. Brilliant!

Brilliant photo! I’ve seen largely, silhouette shots captured at dusk, in the warm orange glow of a sunset. This is of the moon rising! Awesome! Nope – not the “bad moon rising” variety. This has an almost ethereal feel. It’s serene in its stark simplicity, yet almost surreal. Truly brilliant!

Hello, AdLibber. It was a very rare chance for me to capture this photo. I wasn’t even paying attention to the moon nor did I have to carefully choose my angle (I just finished photographing a nomadic herder, see https://travellingartist.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/the-nomadic-herder-of-mongolia, when I noticed this scene). The moon and the horses just happened to be there and I happened to be in the perfect position.
